WHY AFFORDABLE COUNSELLING MATTERS

The Issue – Gaps in Mental Health Support

Many people in Barnsley and across the UK are experiencing long waiting times for mental health services, limited numbers of sessions, or difficulty accessing support at all.

Public mental health services are under increasing pressure, and private counselling fees of £40–£70+ per hour are out of reach for many individuals and families.

As a result, people often struggle alone with anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, or overwhelming stress, hoping things will improve without the support they need.

What Local People Told Us

In 2025, RDCS ran an anonymous questionnaire across Barnsley and received around 100 responses from people with experience of counselling or interest in accessing support.

Many respondents who had accessed free counselling felt that the support had potential but ended too quickly to bring lasting change, reflecting frustration with standard short‑term models.

Others reported that they had not started counselling at all because the waiting lists were too long or the cost of private therapy was too high.
At the same time, most people who had never tried counselling said they might be willing to in future if financial and access barriers were reduced, suggesting strong underlying openness to therapy.

Community and Individual Benefits of Early, Low‑Cost Counselling

By offering early, low‑cost counselling in Barnsley, RDCS helps people seek support before their difficulties escalate into crisis, severe depression, addiction, or suicidal thoughts.

When people access counselling sooner, they are more able to manage their mental health, maintain relationships, and stay engaged in education, work, and family life.

This not only benefits individuals but also reduces pressure on GP surgeries, emergency departments, and wider NHS services, while contributing to stronger, more resilient communities.
