What is Reflective Development Counselling Space (RDCS) and who is it for?

Reflective Development Counselling Space (RDCS) is a Community Interest Company offering low‑cost, person‑centred counselling in Barnsley.

We are here for adults who want a safe, confidential space to talk, especially those who are on long NHS waiting lists, not currently receiving other support, or who find typical private therapy fees unaffordable.

What types of counselling do you offer in Barnsley?

Our core service is individual, one‑to‑one counselling for adults, using a person‑centred approach.

We support people with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including anxiety, low mood and depression, stress, trauma, addiction, relationship issues, self‑esteem concerns, and times of life change or loss.

As we grow, we plan to expand into couple counselling, group work, and specialist approaches such as EMDR and hypnotherapy.

How much does counselling cost and do you offer concessions?

After a free initial consultation, our base rate is £30 per 50–60 minute counselling session.

We understand that finances can be a barrier, so we offer concessions for people on lower incomes or in difficult financial circumstances, which we can discuss together in confidence.

Our aim is to keep counselling in Barnsley as accessible as possible, while still ensuring our service is sustainable.

What happens in the free initial consultation?

The free initial consultation is a relaxed opportunity to meet with a counsellor and get a feel for how counselling at RDCS works.

You can share a little about what has brought you to counselling, ask any questions you may have, and discuss what you hope to get from sessions.

There is no obligation to continue afterwards; the purpose is to help you decide whether counselling with us feels like a good fit.

How quickly can I start counselling with RDCS in Barnsley?

We aim to offer appointments within 1–2 weeks of your first contact, depending on availability and your scheduling needs.

This is significantly shorter than many waiting times for other services, and is part of our commitment to early, accessible support.

If we are unable to offer your preferred times immediately, we will discuss alternatives and keep you informed of any new openings.

How many counselling sessions will I need and how does the block booking work?

The number of sessions varies from person to person and depends on your needs, circumstances, and goals for counselling.

Some people find a shorter block of sessions helpful, while others prefer longer‑term work; your counsellor will review this with you regularly.

If you choose our block booking option, you can book 9 sessions for £240 (following your free consultation), which is a 20% discount compared to paying session‑by‑session and effectively gives you two sessions free, with the full amount payable by session 3.

Who are the counsellors at RDCS and what are their backgrounds?

RDCS is co‑founded and run by Chris Sanders and Rosanna Duggan, both qualified, person‑centred counsellors.

Chris brings extensive lived experience of PTSD, addiction, homelessness and serious physical illness alongside his professional training, giving him deep insight into trauma and resilience.

Rosanna has many years of experience in psychiatric in‑patient settings, supported living, rehabilitation and substance misuse services, and is passionate about tailoring counselling to each individual rather than using a “one size fits all” approach.

Do you offer online or remote counselling as well as in‑person sessions?

Yes, in addition to in‑person counselling in Barnsley, we are developing online and telephone counselling options to make support more accessible.

Remote counselling can be especially helpful if you have mobility difficulties, health issues, caring responsibilities, or anxiety about travelling.

We work to ensure remote sessions are as safe, confidential and relational as in‑person work.

I’m on a long NHS waiting list or not currently receiving support – can I still come to RDCS?

Absolutely. RDCS was created specifically with people like you in mind.

Many of our clients are on long waiting lists for NHS mental health services, do not meet thresholds for secondary care, or have struggled to access help elsewhere.

Our aim is to offer a timely, affordable counselling option so you do not have to face things alone while you wait or navigate other services.

Is RDCS a not‑for‑profit service and how does your Community Interest Company (CIC) model help?

Yes. RDCS is registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC), which means we operate on a not‑for‑profit basis for community benefit.

Any surplus we generate is reinvested into counselling provision, fair wages for staff, student placements, and community outreach rather than paid to shareholders.

This model helps us keep counselling fees low in Barnsley and focus on long‑term, sustainable support for the people who need it most.
